MEMBERSHIP
The Institution has five
categories of Membership – Fellows, Full Members, Associates,
Probationers and Students.
ADMISSION
CRITERIA
Students
Candidates must have
passed the GCE O’Level or its equivalent with credit passes in
Mathematics, Physics and English Language and in addition, must be engaged
in full time study in a recognized Survey Training Institution or employed
in a
recognized Survey Establishment headed by a Registered Surveyor.
Probationer
Membership
Any candidate with
at least a First Degree or HND in Surveying or their
equivalents or a SURCON Registered Survey Technologist.
Associate
Membership
A holder of a First Degree
in Surveying or its equivalent; a Post Graduate
Diploma or Professional Diploma in Surveying or a holder of Registered
Surveyors Certificate with at least 2 years post qualification work
experience.
Full
Membership
Any Associate Member with
a minimum of 3 years Associate Membership.
Fellow
Any Full Member with a minimum
of 10 years active Corporate Membership.
Granted on merit as determined by the Board of Fellow

CONDITIONS
FOR ELIGIBILITY FOR FELOWSHIP STATUS
The following conditions
for eligibility for elevation to Fellowship Status are recompiled after
redefinition of certain areas to remove ambiguity. They are presented
for members study and guidance towards determining their eligibility
and correct filling of the Application Forms, in order to reduce incidence
of failures and disappointments.
The Board of Fellows has approved the following minimum conditions for
elevation to
the Fellowship Status of the Institution.
1.
The prescribed Application Form must be fully completed, and returned
with the evidence of payment for the form and the processing fee.
2.
Application must be proposed by two (2) Financial Fellows who must also
write in support of their proposals. It is the candidate’s responsibility
to ensure that their two sponsors send in letters of recommendation.
3.
A letter of recommendation from the State NIS Chairman must accompany
the Form.
4.
Candidate must have had at least 10 years of Corporate Membership at
the time of
application.
5.
Candidate must have been registered as a Surveyor to practice for at
least 10 years
at the time of application.
6.
Candidate must be at least 45 years old.
7.
Candidate must satisfy and ensure payment of subscriptions and other
dues, as and when due, for at least a continuous period of 5 years immediately
preceding the time of application.
8.
Candidate shall show a record of regular attendance and participation
at Institution’s AGMs to a total minimum of 60% within a 5 (five)
year period immediately preceding the application, and a reasonable
record of participation at Workshops, Lectures, Symposia, etc.
9.
Candidate must be of good character and uphold the Code of Ethics of
the Institution at all times.
10.
Attach two (2) passport size photographs of self.
11.
Attach ten (10) copies of current C. V.
12.
Attach ten (10) copies of a write-up in prose form, of not more than
500 words on:
i.
your contributions to the profession and NIS,
ii. your vision for the Institution and why you should be elevated.
13.
The Application Form must be accompanied on its return by a non-refundable
Processing Fee of Five Thousand Naira (N5, 000.00).
14.
A fresh application after an unsuccessful one must be accompanied with
a fresh
processing fee.
15.
Candidates, who fail to attend a scheduled interview due to proven unavoidable
circumstance, may be allowed to attend in the following year without
having to make a fresh application.
16.
Candidates are required to show evidence of upgrading their professional
knowledge through further training, including participation in the Institution’s
MCPD Programmes at National and/or local levels, and other such related
programmes.
17.
Any false information will count against the applicant.
18.
Incumbent Officers of the Institution shall not be eligible to apply
for elevation until the end of their service.
19.
Duly completed Application Form and all other relevant documents must
be submitted to the National Secretariat not later than 30th June of
every year.
20.
Candidates would before being considered by the Committee, be certified
as not having any cases with the Ethics Committee of the Institution
or SURCON. In this regard, the Secretariat shall obtain a Clearance
from the NIS Ethics Committee and SURCON to the effect that the Candidates
have clean records with both bodies. Any candidate who is under sanction
from NIS or SURCON will not be eligible until ten (10) years after he
must have served or complied with the sanction.
21.
All information will be treated as confidential.
